Zoom lenses are pretty common on the best camera phones, and for good reason. They bring distant subjects closer, and more recent technology has improved the fruits of these cameras considerably. Using two dedicated zoom cameras has also helped OEMs improve the quality of shots at specific zoom levels.

But this setup may not be needed for much longer, at least for Samsung. According to rumors, the Samsung Galaxy S22 series may pack even more imaging advancements, with a continuous zoom camera slated for inclusion. This means the firm could get away with using a single zoom camera that can span across multiple zoom ranges.

To this end, we asked readers if they’d buy a phone with such a camera. Here’s what you told us.

Would you buy a phone with a continuous zoom camera?

Results

More than 54% of voters are adamant they’d purchase a phone with the tech, ticking the “yes, of course” box.

Not everyone is convinced by continuous zoom cameras just yet. Just under 36% of respondents told us they’d have to check the camera’s quality and the device’s cost before making a decision.

Overall, less than 10% of readers are either happy with their current smartphone zoom capabilities or don’t care for zoom at all.

Here’s what you told us

  • Wongwatt: I’m interested even though I hate Samsung’s Android. If they manage to put this on a smaller device than the current Ultra models I may have to give Samsung my money.
  • Painfully_Candid: I just hate how huge the Ultra devices are. Heck, the basic S10 is too large as it is. But when it comes to the cameras, nobody does a great job. And if someone can’t build a camera that is so OBVIOUSLY superior that nobody would deny it, then it’s basically a coin toss.
  • MM_Rafez: I would say not to play with the 10x one unless the zoom can go beyond 10x. I think the variable zoom lens should be between 2x-5x. As it’s a new tech I believe it won’t be possible to give 2x-10x lens.
  • Setebos: I know we’re talking about mobile phones here and this may actually be a useful feature but I would just like to point out that prime lenses are always superior to zoom lenses in real cameras. If you want the best quality and wider apertures, prime lenses are the way to go. Zooms are convenient when you can’t change lenses.
